I created a scheduled post for a future date and accidentally dragged the post to today. Because the time had already passed, the post automatically published.

This is how it works in WordPress: When you change the date/time on a scheduled post to a date/time in the past, the button changes to publish. But there are multiple clicks here, so it’s okay. With drag and drop though, there’s no confirmation: One mess up and you’ve accidentally published a story. Maybe a prompt saying that “this date/time has already passed, are you sure you want to publish this story” or simply not allowing dragging and dropping into the past for scheduled stories?

Thank you for using the Editorial Calendar. I’m sorry you’re having trouble with it.

Can you tell me a bit more about what happened? We have a check to make sure that you can’t drag posts into the past. Is it possible that you dropped it into the current day just a little earlier than it was scheduled to post?

Yeah you’re right, it has to be the current day — so it’s more problematic as more of the day has passed. The calendar lets you drag and drop a scheduled post into the current day, even if the time is earlier than the current time, and just autopublishes the post. I realize that’s an edge case, but still a concerning one!

I’m sorry it took me a while to respond to this. I’ve been thinking about the right response.

The more I think about this more it seems like a real edge case without dire consequences. You can always unpublish a post if you run into this case. I know this was confusing, but I don’t think an “Are you sure” warning message would really help here.

You are correct that this is an edge case though, but I figured I would bring it up since it did come up in our testing. Publishing a post accidentally (and then unpublishing it) is a post is a big problem on large installations of WordPress due to SEO implications, broken links, etc.
