With all the fancy export and import wordpress is supposed to do, it should not be so hard to move next gen from one site to another. BUT it is. I have tried an export to xml, Setup and activated nextgen on the new site. FTP up all the gallery images from the old site. Imported the old site xml to the new site. Everything comes over fine except any nextgen stuff.

So how would one move nextgen from one site to another.

  • @flyfisher842, have you changed URLs or domain name?

@flyfisher842 – Have you tried the Reset Option under Gallery > Other Options?

@cais > I just tried the reset. As far as I can tell it did not do a thing. No galleries show up on the dashboard. I know the galleries are in the new site because I FTP them up to the correct location.

@flyfisher842 – If the galleries were not directly part of the migration they may not be recognized by NextGEN Gallery. It reads as though you moved the site content via the WordPress Import/Export tools which will not move NextGEN Gallery.

You may need to “import” those gallery folders now and re-set/re-save the inserted galleries on the site as I do not expect the “placeholder” ID (from the NextGEN Gallery <img> codes) to match as is.

Shortcode versions will also likely need to have their gallery IDs checked as well.

@ Cais Not sure what you mean by import. And yes I used the export and import wp tools.

If by import, do you mean some setting or option in the ngg plugin settings?

@flyfisher842 – Yes, under Gallery > Add Gallery / Images … the bottom panel on the page (below the upload area) will allow you to import the images from the folders you uploaded to.

If the images are in the root of the installation you may need to add the following to your wp-config.php:

    define( 'NGG_IMPORT_ROOT', dirname( __FILE__ ) . '/' );

@cais > I had just downloaded the entire gallery folder from the old site and then FTP it back to the new site in the same position. After trying your import using the bottom panel, I got the first to import with the correct number of images. But the second gallery I tried I got doubled images and all my original names disappeared in favor of the exif data.

It appears to me that I should not be uploading any dynamic or thumbs folders and just let NGG rebuild them.

I think this is where some of my doubled images are coming from.

so restore my DB back to before any kind of import happened and start over. Good thing about db backups at the proper time, it allows for restore and retesting when I mess something up. By the time I do this a few more times, I may not mess up when I do the real thing.

Thanks for the help, progress is happening.

I have never moved a site with NGG so this has been a real learning experience.

@flyfisher842 – Thanks for the follow up … and, yes, there is no need to upload and import the “dynamic” and “thumbs” folders as they will be re-generated as needed.

The “dynamic” folder images especially will be different and would be regenerated in most cases no matter what anyways.
