Moving my domain to www.remarpro.com

  • Hello. Originally, I was trying to create my website on wordpress.com. I have purchased “Personal” plan there and a domain: rainyrainyrecords.com
    After some extra research, I realised, that I was wrong, and I need www.remarpro.com due to its many customisation features and ability to install plug-ins.

    I started researching how to set up a website on www.remarpro.com. I found I need hosting first, so I went to bluehost.com and purchased hosting space.
    There I clicked on wordpress-1-click-installation, typed in “rainyrainyrecords.com”, it said it was available and then “installation successful”.

    Then I was really confused as to what to do next. Do I have to go to wordpress.com and tell it to move my domain to .org? I really can’t find any info as how to do that.

    I thought .org would be the same: dashboard etc, but I cannot find any such button here on this website.

    So here I am, with a purchased bluehost hosting, and with a purchased from wordpress.COM domain.

    I really just want to use self-hosted www.remarpro.com website with all these customisation features and plug-ins, using bluehost, with my already-purchased-on-wordpress.COM domain “rainyrainyrecords.com”.

    I think I am going to go crazy before this is done. Please, help me.

    WordPress.com Business Plan now allows you to install any theme and plugin, just like any other managed WordPress service… so the above information is not exactly true.

    The custom plugin feature is something new, so most of the articles you read are either outdated or the author may not be well-informed.

    Sure, the business plan costs $24.95/month — which may be 4-5 times what you pay at Bluehost. But, generally, you get what you pay for. This is a managed WordPress service where they take care of your WordPress updates, security and backup for you (comparable with WPEngine, Kinsta, Flywheel, etc).

    Firstly, thank you for your answers.

    These articles that you gave me miss one step I do not understand.

    They say “now upload the theme to your self-hosted www.remarpro.com website”
    or “upload you contents to your .org website”.

    The problem is, I do not have a .org website yet, and I cannot find anywhere how to get one..

    By .org site, they mean your Bluehost site that you setup with the 1-click installation.

    It’s called .org because typically you’d visit www.remarpro.com to download the software and install on your own hosting account. But it looks like your host (Bluehost) has a 1-click installer, so you didn’t need to download anything.

    So, your .org site is your Bluehost WordPress site.

    However, I do not understand, why Bluehost just asked me for a domain name, and I just typed in “rainyrainyrecords.com” (which I bought on wordpress.com) and it just accepted it without any questions about transferring it from wordpress.com hosting, or even verifying that I own it…

    Hi Danny. I know how frustrating it can be when you were using the free wordpress.com version for ages and you want to “upgrade” to the proper WordPress site. I spent weeks trying to figure this out myself since I didn’t have much technical experience.

    I had this website sharing information about India (since I travel a lot) that was hosted on WordPress.com but I wanted to move to [redacted] to just look more professional. Tried my luck using help on Smashing Magazine but it didn’t really work our the way I wanted and my hosting wasn’t really supportive. Then I went to Youtube, found Tyler’s video and the rest is history.

    What I also recommend you to do is find a hosting company that offers live chat support. Namecheap is extremely helpful when it comes to helping their customers to figure out stuff like WordPress installations.

    That’s because none of that is necessary. Putting the domain in the auto-installer does not in any way affect the domain or your old WordPress.com site. You could put google.com into it for what it’s worth: this is definitely not a security flaw, as it has no effect on the domain or the current site.

    Also, while you can, please note that you don’t need to TRANSFER (ie MOVE) your domain from WordPress.com in order to get it working with your Bluehost hosting account [see note below].

    You can keep the domain at WordPress.com, but configure it to “point” the domain to Bluehost’s servers. The instructions are here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/change-name-servers/

    If you follow this option, your domain will be working with your new Bluehost site immediately or within a couple of hours.

    Of course, you can also totally TRANSFER the domain away from WordPress.com to Bluehost. The instructions are here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/transfer-domain-registration/

    But note that the TRANSFER can take anywhere from 1-7 days to complete (typically 5 days). So even if you want to transfer (again, this is not necessary), I’ll still advise you first update the name servers to point the domain to Bluehost’s servers before initiating the transfer. This way you wouldn’t have to wait for 5 days or so before you can work on the site.

    [NOTE]
    In fact, many people CHOOSE to have their domain with one company and host their site elsewhere. This way, if there’s ever a major issue (billing differences, prolonged outage, etc) they can easily get a new hosting account, restore a backup of their site, and point the domain to the new hosting account. It’s the old advice to not put all your eggs in one basket.
