Moving multisite keeping live site working

    We have a mulitsite installation that needs to be moved to a new hosting account while keeping the live site working (or with minimal downtime). Old and new hosting are at GoDaddy.

    I’ve seen Andrea_r say the domain name is stored in multiple places in database for multisite installations.

    My hosting provider told me to create a

    • sub-domain for the primary domain for the new hosting account
    • install WP and copy the files and database over to that new domain
    • than change the DNS records and IP address

      I don’t have much confidence in this process. Can someone tell me if this seems like it will work?

    If both old and new hosting are on the same … host, why do you need to do it? GoDaddy should be able to move that for you seemlessly. Unless you’re changing the domain, it’s really just a pick up and move. Wait for the dns to catch up (I’d expect MAYBE an hour but MAX would be 72 in a total worst case), and have a beer.

    It needs to be moved for business reasons. I thought exactly what you are saying and have talked to folks at GoDaddy several times about this.

    I’ll give it another shot.

    If the domain isn’t changing you don’t need to fix anything in the db.

    Tip: GoDaddy tech support are clueless about multisite.

    We just did this for our multisite installation — moved to a different server. FTP all of the WordPress files over to the new server (we FTP’ed to our computers and then uploaded). Then, do a database dump of the entire database and upload it to the new server’s database. Make sure your database name, username, and password are correct in wp-config.php (if you changed them on the new server).

    Update the DNS and then, as Ipstenu said, have a beer!

    Don’t forget to add any MX or email records if needed.

    It’s a very simply and painless process, assuming the domain names aren’t changing, and happens with no downtime. WordPress and the databases don’t care which server they’re on, and you only need to make changes to the database (in this case) if you’re changing domain names.

    Yes, if you’re just moving to a new server and not changing the domain name, it’s the exact same process* as moving a single site.

    * caveats: if you have subdomains, make sure the wildcard is set on the new host.
    If you have mapped domains, you’ll need to point them to the new host as well.

    Yes BUT I think you can only have wildcard subdomains if you have dedicated hosting? That would be a question for them.

    Ask them.

    Actually, when moving to a new host, if subdomains are what you;re using, that questions needs to be asked *before* you move your site over to them.

    GoDaddy requires you to get a dedicated IP address for wildcard subdomains.
