• Hi,

I have WP site that I’ve been told by my service provider needs to be “moved” before I can point it to a live URL. My service provider won’t help. This is new to me.

    The current URL is https://blissoncrown.net.au/dev/

But it needs to be https://blissoncrown.net.au/

I’m sure this is an easy thing to do for someone who knows what they’re doing but I don’t.

Is there a step-by-step guide for total noobs like me? i don’t even know if I’m using the correct terminology.

    Thanks

  • I think the quickest and safest way to do that, is to backup your db into a sql file (with phpmyadmin, MySql Workbench or whatever you use).

Make a backup of the file.

Then, open the file with a text editor and make a search & replace for the string “blissoncrown.net.au/dev/” to “blissoncrown.net.au/”, and after that you only need to restore the db with the modified file.

Be aware of the text codification.

But beware, because you may have data from plugins, and db variables, and they may be url’s that need to be changed too. The quickest & safest way is the one i told you.

    A quick update.

I’ve created a full back up in my cPanel and its currently in my root folder.

I’ve developed the site using .net.au/dev/ it needs to be .com.au

I’ve been told by my service provider I can change my Primary Domain Name and change my Name Server and then I can move the WP installation later.

So that’s what I’m doing as this is a bit much for me. I need to get the site live ASAP.

So I think once this is done it will be .com.au/dev/ ?

And can then I can ‘move’ WP installation and be ride of the /dev/ bit? I bloody hope so. I have no idea what I’m doing.

I do have a few plugins, db variables? What are they? Will have to re-create my pages and posts again. I had an issue with permalinks too, which I fixed.
