Moving hosts / domains with a wordpress site.

Hello, What is the best practice for building and moving a wordpress site? I have built and moved two major wordpress sites. With each site move, it has become a day long event with trial and error. Is there a simplified way?Exporting the site and importing left too much work that did not cary over and would require rebuilding most of the sites.
