• Hello,

I am looking at moving a clients website. It’s quite large and gets a lot of traffic daily so we want to minimise any downtime if possible.

My question is as we are using W3 Total Cache, what is the best practice when moving to a different server? Should we export our settings, delete the plugin and then export? My concern is that there might be some hard links within the cached files / DB files that would cause issues.

Thanks for your help in advance.

  • The steps you’re describing will be fine, but simply deactivating W3 Total Cache after exporting the settings is sufficient.

And to be clear, exporting the settings is just an added insurance step, a properly migrated site will have no issues—W3 Total Cache settings are stored in /wp-content/w3tc-config/master.php

Thanks Willie. Is there any need to delete the plugin? Or just disable when moving?

    Just disabling will be fine.

Great. Are there any hard link stored in the Database or Cached files? I have seen this sometimes with other plugins where we have moved servers and the folder structure to the root is different?

No, the steps above will be fine in migrating your site.
