When first setting up my wordpress website, I installed it in a subdirectory called “main”.

I did this so the main website would still be up and running while I developed the new one. Once I finished, I wanted to move it over to the main directory. However, I could not figure out how to move it over. So, I tried installing a second install, into the main directory and using the current database instead of creating a new one. That did not go well. So I removed that install and reinstalled into the main directory and created a new database, but exported all data from the /main database and imported it into the root directory install. A lot of features and tweaks to plugins, widgets, etc did not carry over. So that was a bust.

Finally I figured out that I could change a setting within the WordPress settings that would allow me to login at the root directory instead of /main, and it also would display to users as https://www.mywebsite.com instead of https://www.mywebsite.com/main. So, I thought all was good and problem solved.

However, the problem I have now is that when I upload media files, such as pictures, the pictures will not load/display and even say file not found. I am hoping someone can offer me some advice on how to solve this conundrum! Thanks in advance!

    nevermind, I figured it out.

All I had to do was go to Sttings>>Media>> Store uploads in this folder

Remove the /main, and voila, everything works normally now!!

I had this problem too. I’m afraid to put 2 wordpress installs on the server but I think this is why the site is only showing up here:

and not here (my placeholder info):

Do you think I can just do a second install and not create a new database?
