    Hi everyone –

So I’ve got a fun night ahead of me.

I’m ditching my current host (Westhost) for another (Bluehost).

Over on the Westhost box, I have an old version of WordPress running (2.1) using mysql 4.1.22.

We’re going to 2.6.2 (via Fantastico) on the Bluehost box with a mysql 5.0.45 server install, it looks like.

I’m thinking that the only way to do this will be to create dummy install of WordPress 2.1 over on Bluehost, import my old tables there, upgrade that dummy install to 2.6.2, export those tables into a file, then import them into the real (Fantastico-sanctioned) install of WP 2.6.2.

(I don’t really care about themes and plugins – I’ll be redesigning the new install from top to bottom once the database and content is stable.)

Is there an easier way? I’d rather not try to upgrade the live install from 2.1 to 2.6.2, hence the “middleman” dummy install. I can’t see any other way to do it other than what I’ve just outlined.

    Thanks,
    E

  • Why the Fantastico love? Once you install with F you have to upgrade with F.

If you can manage the install/upgrade cycle yourself, as your post suggests that you can -do that!

The only thing I would suggest is creating the middleman install on the old host. You’ve been using their environment and won’t have to factor in .htaccess/PHP issues etc. Once upgraded, you can generate the XML export AND get the db dump! Delete all spam comments etc first!

    Cheers.

Also, another question: what’s “the XML export”? ??

I thought all I had to do was just dump what was in the old database into the new one.

    thank you!

newer versions of wp than the one you are currently using include the ability to export posts from the admin area. After youve upgraded, if you dont see it, come back ??
