Question for all and be advised I am technical noob.I’ve tried doing a search for articles but they’re all three years old, nothing recent.

I am moving to a Managed VPS hosting plan and I’ve been reading a lot of good things about ngnix. My question is, if I have them change from Apache to Ngnix is there something specifically that I’ll need to be on the lookout for that will need to be changed in my wordpress sites? I’ve read some things about .htaccess files, which I do have in all of my sites for some additional security measures. Will those need to be changed to something different prior to the move so the sites don’t error out or is everything pretty seamless when switching?

Again I will have managed hosting I just want to know if there’s something I’ll need to tell them to be on the look out for, or will have to change myself inside of WordPress if I make the switch.

  • Hello,

WordPress works pretty much flawlessly on Nginx (actually if you’re running a high-traffic WordPress site you *should* be looking into switching to Nginx).

.htaccess files indeed don’t work on Nginx, so if you’ve got anything other than the default WordPress .htaccess file, then you’ll need to convert that to Nginx configuration (or your host should since you’re on managed hosting).

Most caching plugins will provide you with the required Nginx config now so there’s no guesswork involved ?? If you use W3TC or WP Super Cache you will receive a notification with all the necessary nginx configuration you need to apply and you can either edit your site’s Nginx config yourself, or send the code to your host and they’ll apply it for you.

In the end, switching to Nginx should give you no problems at all, to the contrary – you’ll enjoy better resource management and performance.
