Moving blog to new domain?

  • Hi, all. ??
    My site address is about to change, and, when that happens, my blog is suddenly going to find itself both under a new URL, and in a differently named folder. The MySQL database will still technically be available (same CPanel account).

    Can I just let this address change happen, without touching my configuration yet, or do I have to FIRST retarget the MySQL databases and WordPress config files? I was assuming it would be easier to just re-link everything after the change, but I don’t want to break anything.

    Thanks. ?? I saw that, but was wondering if I could do the domain change FIRST, then worry about fixing all the blog/database settings later.

    WordPress is very dependent on “knowing” its URL. If you start it with a different URL than the one it “thinks” it is at, then it immediately redirects itself to the URL it thinks it is on.

    All of which means that your site will not work if you move WordPress to a new URL without “telling it”.

    To be precise: you can move WordPress to a new URL BEFORE updating all of its URL settings, but it won’t work until you have them right. wp-config.php and two database entries (WordPress Address and Site Address) are the minimum required to start up the Admin panel.

    I see, thanks. So, what I’ll do is temporarily break the blog, by changing the domains, and re-link them afterward. If I understand this right, nothing bad should happen, except my blog being down for a short time.

    That is correct.
