Moving blog CONTENT to a new WP install

  • I have not been able to resolve the WP3.5.1 upgrade problem with the media button and other quirks, despite trying a multitude of suggestions/tips/procedures on here and the web in general. So I have decided to try creating a new backend D/B and do a fresh install of V3.5.1.

    Does anybody know of an easy way to move the content (blog posts, comments, attachments/images/videos embedded in posts) from the old installation to the new? I’d like to avoid the painstaking long hand way of copying and re-posting every last post and comment from one to the other. Any ideas would be a great help.

  • If you are not changing the domain name then it’s pretty easy. Just follow these instructions.

    To do a fresh install of WordPress, if you have FTP access, all you need to do is delete the wp-admin, wp-includes and root files EXCEPT the wp-config.php.

    Then re-upload a fresh copy of wp-admin, wp-includes and all the root files.
    That’s it.

    The wp-content is the folder that has all your theme files, plugins and images, so DON’T delete it.
    Your data is in the database, so it shouldn’t be affected.

    I want to create a new MySQL database and install WP3.5.1 clean and empty in a new folder totally separated from my current WP install that is having the upgrade problem. Then I want to move the old content to the new install.

    The reason why I want to try this is because I’ve already tried the instructions above and deleted wp-admin, wp-includes and all root files except wp-config.php, and then FTP’d the 3.5.1 files and folders. It did not correct the media button no working problem. I’ve tried doing it again after deactivating all plugins and it doesn’t resolve my problem. So I’d like to try a completely new install of 3.5.1 as if starting from complete scratch, to include a clean SQL database, and then add in the old site content once I get a good working installation of 3.5.1.

    Is there any export/import script that can do that?

    You could also try exporting your content using the Tools > Export section of your current site and then in your new installation, import it.
