Very helpful; thank you for your swift response.

One worry I have – the instructions mention a “web.config” file which I don’t seem to have (the nearest named file is one called “wp-config.php”; is this it, says he, with hands clasped in prayer !!??)

Are you hosted on a Windows or *nix server?

esmi ….. ‘Are you hosted on a Windows or *nix server?’

I’m sorry, I have absolutely NO idea; the website is something I inherited some years ago for the association here in France. Someone else pays the annual sub; all I was given were the co-ordinates for accessing and uploading data and pages.

Is there maybe a clue in the directory listing on the server which may tell me which it is ?
Thank you again for your troubles in responding to my questions

@dannymoe34: It is impolite and contrary to forum policy to interrupt another poster’s ongoing thread with a question of your own. Please post your own topic.

@paulcliman: You will only have a web.config file if you are hosted on a Windows server. Do you have any .htaccess files on the server?

Ah….. now I have read the instructions more closely; yes, I have a ‘.htaccess file.
Thank you for your help and apologies for not understanding sooner !

    Are you OK now?

Just watched France (and then England) win their Euro 2012 matches, so feeling drained!
But, yes, I shall try it in the morning and think I have got the procedure in my head.
    Thank you again.

    SORRY… back again.
I have just followed the instructions to the letter and .. it doesn’t work for me.
I am receiving the following messages when I try to open the site :

Warning: require(./wp-blog-header.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /homez.63/euromaye/www/index.php on line 17

Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘./wp-blog-header.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/local/lib/php’) in /homez.63/euromaye/www/index.php on line 17

I notice that the structure of this French server is :
    /
    cgi-bin (folder)
    requêtes (folder)
    temporary (folder)
    www (folder)
I also note that “homez.63” and “euromaye” are invisible/hidden to my FTP prog (Dreamweaver)

and it is in the “www” folder where all the original files and folders of the old site were situated, and it was here that I copied the .htaccess and index.php files.
I also note that id I click on the blue underlined (function.require) in the error message, I get to the new site !
I think I must be NEARLY there and it is a question of hierarchy ??
    Any ideas please ?
    Cordialement
