Moving a subdivision of WordPress

  • I currently have two WordPress installations on my website, one for the main site and one at blog level. I want to move all my blog articles to the main site so that I only use one going forward, but ideally I don’t want to loose the articles. What’s the best way of moving it (I’m not very technical so layman’s terms would be great).
    My concerns I have are:
    Broken URLS – ideally I want to change these anyway to the same permalink set up as the main site
    Having to keep two WordPresses and plugins up to date to prevent security risks
    Can anyone offer advise or point me in the right direction? Do I still need to do this on the blog installation once I’ve moved all articles?

  • If you use the Tools > Export plugin on the subsite and then Tools > Import on the main site, it should handle the change. If you have any posts or pages or taxonomy terms that are named the same, you might have to manipulate that separately. There is a plugin that can merge taxonomy terms. There is also Better Search and Replace, if you need to fix URLs in content.

    Thank you.I’ve inputted/exported which was very easy. How do I handle to old blog installation. Ideally I want to close it / not have to update it. Once I add redirects which presumably I have to from this instalment (?), can I forget about that WordPress. If I don’t keep it updated, will I be open to security issues?

    You would probably need a single redirect in your .htaccess file if you have the same permalink structure on both.
    Then you can delete the old WordPress folder and the database.
