    Hi Hugh!

Thank you first for this wonderful plugin: I love its simplicity and yet its powerful features. The documentation is a blessing too!
Sorry for my “question” which is not completely related to the plugin but I prefer to ask your advice BEFORE issues arise. ^^

As the title says, we are merging 2 websites, one having a podcast already registered with iTunes. We already checked on how to migrate the feed but I would like to check with you regarding SSP settings. I already created about 30 Podcasts posts (still Drafts) with the url of every existing audio files. In Podcast Settings, every parameters are the same as the previous podcast.

My main question is concerning the Publishing > External feed URL setting. The old site podcast feed is syndicated in Feedburner and the FeedBurner feed was input in iTunes. I feel like we just have to give our new feed provided by SSP to FeedBurner. Is that right? Do we have to use/modify the Publishing > External feed URL setting?

I apologize in advance if I’m not completely clear. I’m not the original podcaster and podcasting related words are fairly new to me. ^^

Thanks in advance for your advice!

    Fred

    Hi Fred,

Thanks for choosing SSP – ease-of-use is what I was going for with this plugin, so I’m glad you appreciate the simplicity ??

The fact that you’re using FeedBurner actually makes this all a lot easier – the main hurdle when moving podcasts is giving the new feed URL to iTunes, but for you that isn’t going to change so you don’t need to make any changes on iTunes’ side. In fact, your assumption is 100% correct – all you need to do is publish your episodes, then give the new feed URL (found in your podcast publishing settings) to FeedBurner. You will also then have to add the FeedBurner feed URL to your External feed URL setting.

    That’s it ??

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that after moving feeds there’s a good chance that your iTunes listeners will suddenly see all of your episodes as ‘new’ even if they have downloaded/listened to them before. The reason for this is that most feed readers use the episode GUID as a reference point for whether it has been downloaded before. WordPress has it’s own GUID structure, which will be different from whatever platform you have moved from, so they will all be seen as new by feed readers. That being said, I’m 100% sure how iTunes checks for new episodes as they don’t fully reveal that info, but the GUID is most feed readers do it.

    Is that all clear?

In the future I’m going to build an import tool so you can automatically import all of your podcast episodes by just supplying the existing RSS feed URL, but that is quite a while away from development.

If this has helped you then please consider supporting continued development by leaving a review.

    Cheers,
    Hugh

Thanks for the quick and detailed answer: 100% clear! So I have to also add the Feedburner url to the setting: ok!

I checked what you have in mind for 1.9 and that’s already really promising. ??

Don’t worry for the review, I’ll definitely write one as soon as we actually go live for the podcast. It’s not a commercial website but I’ll try to make a small donation as well. ??

    Cheers !
