Moving a large WordPress site

  • First of all; I have read Moving_WordPress several times and have a good grasp on these concepts.

    My problem is that the site I want to move is about 4.5GB. It takes me between 25 and 30 hours to download the site files and bout the same for up speeds. The network I’m on is 40mbps/10mbps so I can only assume it’s my server that is choking the speed. Every time I install the site files on a test URL I find that something gets corrupted. Pages are missing, header styles are gone etc. I’m assuming this some kind of problem with transferring so much data via FTP.

    So I’m wondering if there is a way to transfer my site to a VPS (with Plesk) that does not involve 2-3 days of up/down time and that preserves my site files as they are?

    I should note that I don’t have shell access. The VPS I’m going to is Windows based and I’m moving from a Godaddy shared server.

  • What are you using for an FTP Client? (I can back that up in a few hours).

    Try from another modern, malware free, PC (are your hard drives slow, full, not optimized?) on a good connection (Check your network hardware) using FileZilla and use Explict FTP over TLS – check GD forums. You should be able to run the site well when properly configured on a their Linux Deluxe or Ultimate package. (I would stay away from Windows servers if all you are running is WordPress).

    Note, if you have a bad backup (how did you gather what your are moving?), it is not going to work anywhere.

    I was using Fetch (kicking myself) but I’m using FileZilla from now on. So far my download is about 5 times faster. All of my hardware checks out fine.

    The server is going to be used strictly for this WordPress site. Am I entering a world of hurt with the Windows server? I didn’t have control when the plan was purchased but could try to get them to switch since there’s nothing on it yet.

    The old backups I gathered by downloading from with Fetch. I backed up the database in a few different pieces. The DB backups took me a bit to get down and it’s odd that the file size was different every time.
