moved site to different host, now getting 404 error

Do you have a link to the site so we can look at it for you. Have you pointed the domain over to the new host by changing the DNS records dor nameservers and allowed for propagation?

I haven’t pointed the domain because it is a temporary domain I got from my host.

It’s directly related to your site URL and home settings. Since the site is using the temp URL and the links are pointed to your domain name, it causing the conflict. WordPress is domain name specific. Once you point the domain to your new host and allowed for propagation time it should function correctly.

In the meantime, you can modify your local computer’s hosts file so that anytime YOU visit the site it displays correctly. Here’s a link to modifying your hosts file:

I am stuck on step 2 to when trying to modify my computers hosts file. It asks to ‘Open the hosts file for editing’, I am using a mac.

You can change urls in database wp_options to your host temp urls and then change them once you have your domain name.

I changed the urls in database wp_options, that seemed to resolve the 404 error on the home page. but when i navigate through the site i am getting 404 errors on all the other pages ? ?

I reset the permalinks.

any time you change url or host you will need to reset permalinks unless you using default settings

I have one more issue that i can’t figure out. All my links now link to the Temp URL nicely except for Home which still links to my previous domain ? ? ?

Did you update the site url and home links? I would look to see what your home url and site url are set to.

yes I did, in wordpress admin > Settings > General I changed the two options wordpress address and site address to my new Temp URL.

If you did changed both urls and when I mouse over home I see the domain name so may be some how is hard coded in theme check your header.php and if is hard coded.

Did you check menus as looks like is used as custom menu

The URL was in wp-admin > Appearance > Menus, changed to Temp URL and all fixed!!
