Moved blog, now links don’t work

I decided to make my blog my homepage, so I followed the instructions here. I put the index.php in my root directory, but I could not find an .htaccess file. The perma-link control panel on my site says I need to change the permissions on the .htaccess file. So I tried to create one, following the directions here. Yet when I uploaded the file using my FTP client (Fetch), I got a 505 error for my site. If I delete the .htaccess file, then I can see my site, but the links aren’t correct. I’m lost. Any help would be appreciated.
