Move images to another directory

Your images should all ready be at your host. When you add one to media library or to a post/page it is uploaded.

Do you mean : change the upload folder?
as in where images are uploaded to.
Are you on a self hosted site?
or on wprdpress.com?

I am self hosted. I had read something about if the images were to be hosted somewhere else it could speed up the wordpress web page load time? i am a newbie but working very hard to learn. Any information in layman term will be much appreciated.

Having your own server can slow you down but there are a number of factors to consider. There are cache programs that would help and services like https://www.cloudflare.com/ would also help.

But I am limited to what I can do without my own server, right? I installed a W3 Cache program. I just didn’t know if the images that are on my computer are stored on wordpress servers also or not. I know this probably sounds simple to you but it is not to me. I am very new here and trying really hard to learn it right the first time. Thanks.

Where ever the server is, the images should be if you used the wp dashboard to add images. You should keep backups of the wp-content/downloads folder.

I am using Ipage for my host. Do I need to create a folder in the host on their server and put my images there? If so how would I do that and not end up with a bunch of broken links as I transfer them. Thanks

I don’t see a download folder on my host under my wp-content. Do I need to create this folder and put my images in it or how does it work?

It should have been created when you installed wordpress and uploaded an image. So sorry – that’s what I do before coffee – the folder is uploads and is sorted by year and month. So your images will be there on the server. It is not a bad idea to make copies of that folder ever so often. I back up my entire site just by making a copy of everything and keep it on my computer at home.

Your host normally can also make backups for you of the site and database but they might charge for this. Some charge, some don’t. You should have an option in MySQL which you should see from your host’s control panel to copy or export or backup – not all hosts are the same.

I see, I backed it up yesterday after your reply through the MySQL on my host site. When I do this is there any particular items to back up or do I need to back up the entire date. There are several check boxes, do I need to check them all. Thank you for this information.

Thanks. They said I need to purchase a backup from them but I have the MySql available. She never did say how much I could back up or how many files. I ask her twice. She was too busy trying to sell me something.
