• The Motif Theme does not display correctly on IE8.

I have tried the following extra line in my header.php

    <meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”IE=11,IE=10,IE=9,IE=8″ />

    Can anyone help?

Do we know the developer’s email address?

    Thank you.

    Paul

  • As your theme is only available via wordpress.com, you will need to wait for one of their support people to deal with your questions. To that end, I’ve have tagged this topic for their attention and, hopefully, someone will be along shortly.

In the meantime, do not edit the theme itself. Instead create a child theme for your changes. Or install a custom CSS plugin.

    Hello Esmi

    Funny you should mention that…

I have created a Child Theme.

The people at WordPress.com told me to post here and not there!

Posting here was the right thing to do, since your site is self-hosted: https://www.littlefield.info/

Since IE8 doesn’t support <del>mobile-first development techniques,</del> media queries Motif may not look the same in IE8 as in other browsers. Adding a compatibility line in the header.php likely won’t be able to fix that.

Our themes generally support the three most recent versions of IE, so that would be IE 11, IE 10, and IE 9.

If you need a theme that displays the same in IE8 as in other browsers, one option could be to look for an older theme that doesn’t use mobile-first, HTML5 techniques.

Just let me know if you have any other questions.

Another option would be to serve up a separate stylesheet for IE8, but you’d really need to experiment with that and test it well to get it right. Here’s a resource if you’d like to try it:

    Hi Kathryn

Thank you for your reply, I thought that might be the answer :-/

Thanks also for the web site link.

How do I contact the developer of the Motif Theme to help with this?

If I cannot contact him, call me bad but I will just have to change the theme, because I cannot spend TOO much time on a 5 year old piece of software!

I’m a Happiness Engineer with Automattic, the company that developed Motif, based on a theme called Paradigm, which no longer seems to be available.

You may indeed be better off with another theme if you don’t have the time or inclination to make adjustments for IE8 yourself. Another option would be to hire someone to do the IE8 tweaks for you.

    Best of luck to you!
