• Hi all! I’d greatly appreciate any feedback you’d be willing to share. I just put my site back up using WordPress 2.7, and I have to say it’s been a pretty amazing experience, but I’m sure that is not news to anyone reading this. I’d like specific feedback on the “value” of this site and the presentation of the material. The coding looks like I did it myself, which I did, but if anyone has any thoughts in that regard I’d be very happy to hear that as well. Lastly if anyone has any suggestions for PlugIn’s I’d love to hear about them. I’m using Sociable and All In One SEO so far.

Thanks in advance and I promise as long as you’re nice about things I won’t get any hurt feelings!

  • Sorry that site is simply a mess. Too much information presented in a new catching way. Not even sure where WordPress is fitting into the mix there.

Dude make it less cluttered, it’s pretty much unreadable in it’s current format.

Ugh! Thanks for the honest feedback though. The idea is not dis-similar to retail – if it’s not on the shelf it doesn’t exist (Wal-Mart Vs. The Armani Store) and I get that web design today goes in the opposite direction, but if it’s coming across as a mess that is certainly some thought for pause. I’ll continue to look at the design with that lens.

I’m using WordPress as the CMS for the site so that I can post all the content to various areas both on the index page and on the category pages. For what it’s worth I’m still amazed that I was able to implement WordPress and it’s actually working – 18 months ago I didn’t even know HTML! An interesting little rabbit hole I’ve begun to go down….

    Thanks again,

    David

    Hey David,

I gotta agree with the previous comment… very cluttered. I think it’s a little too much information on one page. It’d be better to maybe highlight the sections into separate pages? To be fair, though, I felt the same way about craigslist and now I’m ok with it. It would help, maybe, if there were more soothing colors (like light blue) instead of bright primary colors. Best of luck!!

Thanks for the feedback! At one point I played around with adding some light colors…. I have a friend working on some icons for the nav bar which should be ready soon – hopefully that will make the nav bar a little more pronounced but I do have each section broken out into its own page as well – clearly that impetus to click through to those distinct pages is not coming through from the way the site currently is.

Lastly – good luck with your launch!

    David,

I agree with the prior comments, I felt lost once it loaded – although great work on content gathering.

I mostly just felt it would be better if the information was organized into blocks / areas based on the content topic and separated from the others. Look at the Yahoo front page and you can see how things are segregated in Yahoo’s style, but idealistically like I am thinking.

Props on the content – keep working at it ??

    Thanks and Thanks!
I’ve been exploring the notion of blocks – I will be trying to implement a little more differentiation between the sections in the next few days – that is a great suggestion – one challenge I’ve had (among many) is for whatever reason I like these really loud strong colors – so hopefully as I build out the “blocks” my color scheme won’t dominate – I’m not ready to walk away from the color scheme yet as a buddy of mine is in the finishing stages of a really cool logo that will play with all the colors in a fun way, but I hear what you are saying.

Sorry, my reference was to layout over functional when I said blocks, there are a few ways to accomplish a desired layout for a news type site such as page templates.

Also look into existing news type themes – many can get you most of the way there.

In response to an earlier suggestion above and some gentle prodding from my wife I’ve implemented a new nav bar. Hopefully this will encourage a little more traveling within the site – any feedback on the nav bar would be great.

ebiladdress – thanks for the thorough reply – greatly appreciated! the category pages are pretty low rent, and hopefully high yield in terms of the information – I’m hoping to continue to roll in some more widgets for each category but you are right in terms of the aesthetics.

    Thanks!

    David
