    lorbach is spot on, the More tag works in any theme, and while the guide above is from the WordPress.com support pages, it works pretty much the same on self-hosted sites too.

    Thank you both for the responses. It turns out this is a good old fashioned case of user error. (Although I still claim the internet is broken.)

    Lorbach, your link explained it perfectly at #4. In preview, it does not show the “Continue Reading”, nor when you are looking at the post directly. However, when it is viewed as part of the front page, it does exactly as expected.
