I’ve read a number of the threads here and am totally confused.

My Featured Images are a variety of sizes.

I have WP set to create a thumbnail that is 200×200 and cropped to make that size. Other plugins use that and resize it to their needs.

Because of other plugins that I use and the design of my site I don’t want to designate a 120×120 size as the thumbnail for everything. Maybe I don’t understand how it works, but I’m afraid that if I use Regenerate Thumbnails that I’ll screw those other things up.

I’ve looked at the Regenerate Thumbnails FAQs and more, and I’m just not figuring this out.

Will it just add one more image size, or will it overwrite what is currently designated as the thumbnail?

Is there some other way to deal with all this other than letting YARPP make the thumbnail on the fly (don’t want to kill speed for every page load)?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Well, after several more hours of research and trying, I think I have an answer. For everyone else, here’s what I have figured out.

    What I’ve learned is that:

    (a) from now on out, YARPP will create the 120×120 size from my Featured Image and apparently cropped (still double-checking to be 100% sure that they are cropped). As far as I can tell, there is no need to use the add_image_size function IF you are happy using 120×120.

    (b) using the Simple Image Sizes plugin will NOT overwrite the existing thumbnail sizes and it will use “yarpp-thumbnail” as the name for the size. Be sure to set it to “crop” on the setting page (it shows up on the Settings/Media page, not under Media) if you want to crop the long dimension. Do NOT close the window/tab until the regeneration is complete. I had just under 1700 images for it to resize, only had it do the yarpp-thumbnail size, and it took about an hour. Your mileage may vary.

    (c) after you generate the new thumbnails, you can deactivate and delete the plugin since from here on out, YARPP is going to create the new size.

    (d) I DID NOT try the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin as the Simple Image Sizes seemed more straightforward in not overwriting my existing thumbnails. I’m not saying that RT would not have worked, just that I couldn’t find info on what it would do.

For now, I’m not marking this as resolved in case I discover any other pertinent info in the next couple of days. In other words, things that may have a glitch. Right now, all is well.

Thank you very much for clarifying this issue! I’ll send users to this thread if they have questions.
