• I just downloaded Make because I need a theme that’ll let me sell photographic prints. I haven’t gotten to the store part, but I’m hoping it’ll let me create a price list and add “Buy” button(s) where needed…

If not, let me know ’cause the questions below won’t matter…

I’m fairly new at WordPress and I don’t understand “widgets”. I’d LIKE to get rid of the black area ABOVE my header image and put my navigation menu UNDER the header image. Is there a simple, idiot-proof way to do this? It says I can have three menus, but I can’t figure out how to use a widget (is that what I need to do?) to put the navigation menu where I’d like it.

Can someone tell me what the dimensions for the header image are? I currently have it set to “contain” and it appears to be about 600×70 px, but when I tell it to use “cover” it goes full width but no taller… So, what dimensions SHOULD I be using for the header image?

I have the side panels off. They’ll HOPEFULLY stay off forever since I don’t care about blogging or whatever. As near as I can tell, the center panel is only about 940 px wide. Is there a simple way for me to make that panel wider since I don’t need the side panels? If it’s in CSS can someone tell me WHERE, and how to create a local CSS file that’ll override what’s in the theme?

Thanks for any help you can provide…

    Hello?

    Hey there!

Welcome to WordPress! I think you’ll find answers to many of your questions in our Simple Start Handbook. I’d start there and make sure you check out the other Make docs.

    For your questions:

    1. Widgets live in sidebars, not on the header… So I’m not entirely clear what you’re asking.

To remove the header bar, go to Customizer → Layout → Header and uncheck the boxes to display search and social icons in the Header Bar.

Try the “Centered” or “Navigation below” header layouts (in the Customizer under Layout → Header) to achieve the look you’re wanting with your navigation menus, and place your menus in the Primary Navigation location.

    2. What do you mean header image? The background image? The dimensions depend on how you’re setting it up and what screen you’re viewing it on… I’d recommend you choose images that are at least 1440px wide if you’re not tiling your images.

    3. There is no simple way to change the width of the content container without heavily modifying the CSS. We do not recommend you do this, as it can create problems in the builder sections also.

Good luck with your site build! I hope that gets you started with Make!

Hi Melissa. Thanks for your reply… As you can probably tell, I’m somewhat new to the whole WordPress world.

    1. I wasn’t aware widgets lived in sidebars. Another new thing to know!

    2. I”m calling the “header bar” the black thing above my header image. I’ve got the layout/header SET to “Navigation Below” and all the social things turned off. I’ve set the menu to the Navigation menu, and this makes my header image fit the available area, which is nice, but it puts the MENU right over the top of the image. I haven’t been able to get it to stop that.
What I’d LIKE to have is my header image – the image in Background Images/Header, NOT have the navigation menu on top of it. I wanted the navigation menu on the page below the background header image. Is that possible?
If, on the other hand, I put the navigation menu ABOVE the background header image, even though I’ve tried sizes from 1024×148 to 1440×184 for that image, they ALL get squished down to a small image about 800 px wide in the center. It works but it’s kinda ugly… If I HAVE to have the navigation menu above the image, is there a way for me to get the image as wide as the center section so it looks normal?
I”ll go read the simple start handbook and make docs and see if I can figure all this out from there.
    BTW: Here’s a link to a picture of what I’m talking about…
