Modifying the Author name (not having to create one)

OK,

So I’m the editor of an online mag/blog, and frequently, I’ll have guest writers or re-publish free content — which makes adding a User/Author each time incredibly time-consuming!

I’ve searched in vain for the ability to change this, but I’m not familiar enough with custom fields to make it happen.

Is there a hack/plugin that can accomplish this?
