Modifying permalinks

What am I doing wrong here regarding my permalink settings? I want to be able to change the name of the pages on the site after the /, but at present, it’s set to page identities of /?page_id=14.

I currently have my Permalink set to ‘Default’ and this allows the home page to pull up by going to the link below, but I can’t edit the page URL names. If I change the Permalink settings to ‘Day and name’, the page names in the URL is the same as the actual page title, but the home page gets the redirect loop message when going back to the home page.
