Modify widget title

I tried to modify the widget titles, i want to replace the text with an image.
So i tought it is a good idea to place this in my template.php
apply_filters('widget_title', imgtitle());
and write a imgtitle-function. But this doesn’t work. Anyone have a idea how i can realize this? I did only found a css-solution in the net. thanks.
