Modify the_excerpt()

Is there an easy way to modify the result of that call? Are there some parameters to change the end “[…]to a kind of “more” link to the permalink? Or, for instance, is it possible to have html in the excerpt field (inserting also picture, for instance)? Many Thanks, chr
