    Hi There

I have the Penscratch theme for my website https://www.contemporaryhealthcare.co.uk and am having trouble getting it to work on mobiles. I have been trying to follow the below instructions. However, once logged in to Wp-admin I find no option in ‘appearance’ for ‘mobile’ to switch the radio button on and save the new setting. I don’t have this problem with any of my other sites.

“…. you can enable an option that will show a mobile-friendly, responsive theme to your mobile visitors only. Go to My Site(s) → WP Admin → Appearance → Mobile in your dashboard. Click on the Yes radio button to enable a mobile-friendly theme, and click on the Update button. You’re set.”

    Can anyone help me please?

    Thank you!
    Emma

    Hi Siobhan

    Thank you for the reply.

I will have another go and yes I do have more plugins now than previously.

    Kind wishes

    Hi Siobhan

I deactivated everything and it has made no difference. Unfortunately due to doing this I need to re-do some things on my website but it shouldn’t take too long. Is there any other way to look at the java script for the menu to toggle on mobile?

    Thank you

    Kind wishes

Phew …. I figured it out …. I had to do a little more with Jetpack and fortunately everything is still there!

    Hi @schadestylli,

I have to admit that I’m stumped.

From inspecting your site, I can see that the files in Penscratch’s js folder are not being pulled in correctly but I’m not sure what specific setting on your site would have caused that.

Do you remember using plugins to make any changes to your theme’s files? For example, I can see you’re using Yoast’s SEO plugin. Did you use that plugin to make changes to your robots.txt file?

Try to think through the steps you took to set up your site and the plugins that you set up along the way. Any information on the changes that you may have made to your theme’s files will be useful.

If we’re unable to pinpoint the specific setting that’s causing this issue, then the only solution may be for you to start again with a fresh installation of WordPress and the theme.

    Hi Siobhan

    Thank you for the reply.

I’m not aware of using plugins to make changes to themes files although I have used Jetpack (if that counts?) and I have only in the past few weeks started to use Yoast for SEO. The problem was present before introducing this plugin. I also haven’t done anything to robots.txt file (I don’t know what this is).

I found the whole migration process not that straight forward for someone who isn’t very tech savvy. I followed the same process for another website https://www.meusydd.co.uk and after migration using the Theme: Nisarg by Falguni Desai the menu toggles fine with no other problems.

Perhaps I should deactivate Penscratch and try another theme to see if it is across the board or just with Penscratch. What do you think? I need to try and keep the downtime of my business website to a minimum. The idea of reinstalling everything from scratch isn’t a good option at the moment.

    Thank you

    Kind wishes

    Hi Emma,

Testing another theme seems like a good idea. Could you try switching to Button (as it shares a similar, minimal design to Penscratch) or one of the default “Twenty” themes (for example, Twenty Fifteen)?

    Hi Siobhan

Thank you for the reply. I will give it go and let you know. I have an exam to prepare for now so I’ll try Button as soon as possible.

    Have a good weekend.

    Hi Siobhan

I was too excited to wait to try this so …. I installed Button tested the menu button on my mobile and it worked. Then I decided to delete the version of Penscratch I had, did a new search to reinstall it from scratch and hooray the mobile menu now toggles! However …. I have a load of stuff at the bottom of each page now (footer) that looks really daft. What is it and how do I turn it in to something functional please?

    Thanks for all your help!

    Have a good weekend.

    Hi there

I have managed to do some research and found this website which uses the WordPress Penscratch theme:

    https://barktime.co.uk

I can see now what the footer should look like and am wondering what I need to do to get it looking like this, better still customising, although the footer.php looks confusing to me at this stage as does making a child-theme. If I can only get it looking like it should I would be happy for now.

Also, my menu on laptop and iPad doesn’t drop down vertically as it does in the above website. Mine goes to the side. It seems I have corrected one issue and created a few more.

I look forward hearing from you.

    Thank you!

    Kind wishes

    Hi There

I have now sorted the strange ongoings with footer but is there a way to customise the footer.php?

    Thanks

I have sorted the menu too …. I’m getting intuitive with Penscratch now:) Phew …. glass of wine time! I think my problems are resolved for the time being. Thank you so much for help guys!!!

@schadestylli: I was so so happy to read through this thread and to see that the mobile menu is now working correctly on your site! ??

In answer to your question: You should not edit your theme’s footer.php file directly. Changes you make there will be lost when it comes time to update your theme.

Instead, to edit that file, you should set up a child theme. The following guides provide a good introduction to child themes, including steps to set one up:

If you’re still not comfortable with the above steps, you could consider a plugin to automate the process of creating a child theme:

It seems like you may be all set with Penscratch now? Please do feel free to start another thread on this forum if you have any extra questions.

    Hi Siobhan

Thank you for the reply and helpful links. I will explore each option and work towards changing the footer in the near future via a child theme.

    Great help, support and encouragement!
