You can only have one SSL certificate per IP address so you would need a wildcard certificate so you could add the domains that you want to run SSL.

You need to use your web server configuration to force the SSL on the domains where you want SSL.

Assuming you have WP 4.4, instead of using domain mapping edit the site URL of the subsites to be the domain you wanted to map & set the scheme according to whether it is SSL or not.

    Hi Ron,

ok you are right one SSL Cert but it can be a multi domain certificate! Would that work?

You can mix SSL & non-SSL sites but it has to be handled in your web server config.

If it is a shared hosting, is the .htaccess file the place to configure it?

You can do it in your .htaccess if there isn’t a place in your control panel to do it.

    Hi Ron

I have a WP Multisite subdirectory install and I would like also to get a SSL certificate.

I just need the SSL for the main domain (example.com) and not for the mapped domains.
I also have other systems installed in subdomains that will use the SSL certificate also.

Do you know if a wildcard SSL will work on this scenario?
(Only the bold items for example.com needs the SSL certificate)

    1. example.com
    2. example.com/store
    3. example.com/support
    4. otherdomain.com
    5. anotherdomain.com

other CMS or a wordpress installs

    1. anothercms.example.com
    2. otherwordpress.example.com

    Thanks

@designium – Most SSL cert providers have a detailed description of what each type of cert they offer supports (ex. https://www.digicert.com/wildcard-ssl-certificates.htm). Once you have picked a provider, verify that the cert you are buying handles the subdomains.

    Thanks Ron!
