• Hello,

a client of mine asked me wether it is possible to change the text of the search box of the calendar, we’re talking about the german version, as there’s some translation mistakes. We’ve seen that it’s been changed with the last update, but it’s actually worse than before.

The search box used to say “Finde”, which means “find” in german and is very unusual, because you’d rather have something like “Suchen”, which means “search”. At least that’s how it is on most german websites.

In the last update it now says “Show Veranstaltungen Search”, which basically means “Show Event search”, but apart from the word “Veranstaltungen” that’s not german, and even if it was directly translated like this, it wouldn’t work because you can’t translate “Show event search” 1:1 in german.

Here’s my suggestion: Change it to “In Veranstaltungen suchen”, this means “Search in Events” and would be the correct german translation.

My client wants to have this fixed quickly as it’s pretty embarrassing. If you’re not going to change it anytime soon, I’d appreciate if you could tell me where in the code I can modify this.

Also, aside from the translation problem, I’d just like to say that the search feature in general appears a little bit clumsy to me. It’s not very clean, it displays in a weird way, covers other text sometimes (for example when an event couldn’t be found), it stretches the background image of the site when you open it, which is weird too, and in general it just doesn’t feel very solid but rather clumsy and not very clean.

Aside from that the Events calendar is a great plugin, keep up the great work!
    Cheers ??

  • Hi @revs,

You’re not alone. It appears EC Version 4.6.26 was not thoroughly tested before going live. Click below for similar issues.

    V4.6.26 Boo Boo No. 1
    V4.6.26 Boo Boo No. 2
More out there (listed in the plugin’s support thread)

Concerning your translation issue, if EC is using Google’s translator (or some other web translator), then you’re going to see poor translations in many cases. They need to use a professional translation source to prevent this problem.

Let’s hope EC will fix this with their next plugin revision. So far, unfortunately, the support team at EC Pro is blaming our theme and not providing specific help to fix this. We already confirmed it’s not our theme causing the issue.

    Cheers!

    Hey there,

    Thanks for reaching out ??

Our translations are done by the community. You can definitely contribute to the translation, or correct the .po and .mo files yourself and upload to your site.

Hello Ed, thanks for your reply!

First question: I’ve checked the first link you posted and I’ve seen that there’s translations in German that I can not see for my clients site. How do we display the plugin in German? I saw that some translations are wrong so I would correct them, but since we see the English version of them on our site, I need to change this first. (And a sidenote: I tried to change “Show %s Search” for example but I couldn’t because it told me that %s was missing, but in German, you would exclude that word, you would just have a word like “search”)

Second question: Where are those .po and .mo files located?

    Thank you ??

    Hi!

I’ve seen the new update and the new change, but I’d just like to point out, that the translation is still wrong. Now it says “Anzeigen Veranstaltungensuche”. This ain’t German. It’s just wrong. We need to be able to remove the “%s” from the translation in order to get a proper translation. I can add the translation, it’s no problem. But before I can do that, someone needs to fix the problem I posted above, which basically prevents me from adding the correct translation.

    Thank you!

Thanks, I’ll make a not of that!

In the meantime, this forum thread might help you override these strings > https://theeventscalendar.com/support/forums/topic/replace-wording/

    Take care,

I’ve seen that you’ve updated the plugin a few times in the mean time and the translation has also changed, but it’s still wrong!

And also, this is off-topic, but the search function in that bar also did not work. I tried searching for specific terms in the events and couldn’t find anything through that search feature, but could find all the searched terms when I used the standard WordPress search feature.

There’s a few things that aren’t done the clean way in this plugin.

    Still no change…
