Missing Category

I think I have a rather serious problem. Some of the categories are missing. I see them in the database, and when I try to recreate them, WordPress tells me that they already exist. But I can’t see them in the category list, they are just invisible. I refreshed like a thousand times, but still can’t see them. Why is that?
