• I am using 1.5.2 of WordPress and have had it setup for a few months now. However, I am trying to add a new category for posts called Diggnation. Even though I already have at least one story in the new section, WordPress will not display it under the categories section. How can I resolve this issue?

Also, when viewing my site in IE 6, my sidebar does not look right. Can anyone help me with this as well?

You can view the URL of the WordPress blog at https://www.rutherfordfamily.net

Thanks in advance for your help!

Sorry, I did not realize that and apologize for any confusion. You can see the code here:

    https://pastebin.com/469133

(could you, please, correct the URI in your profile by adding http, so that we can click on your name to see the site and don’t have to scroll up to the first post?)

OK, I am a bit confused. You have that commented out line in your sidebar
    <!--This returns all links from within WordPress<?php get_links('-1', '', '<br />', '<br />', 0, 'name', 0, 0, -1, 0); ?> -->
which doesn’t display in the browser, but the code is still executed, and I see links to your categories in it. Just click the View source to see what I am talking about.) Why are your categories listed in the links? Including that “Diggnation” that you are missing?

I’d start by deleting the code above from the sidebar and maybe in the Links Manager also cleaning up the links that point to the categories. See what happens…

Probably because the OP is confused by the duplication within wordpress of the “category” usage, the way I was for a while when I started….

A “category” is added by using Options/Manage/Categories. So that’s where “Diggnation” needed to be input. The confusion arises when one sees that the Options/Links/ page ALSO has a “categories” section….

Too bad that they’re similarly named, because it CAN be confusing.

Aha, I see, never thought of that (though now as you, vkaryl, posted this I remember a client of mine… it took me 2 days to explain the difference between the post Categories and Link Categories).

There is no Options/Manage/Categories in 1.5.2. Where can I locate this to correctly add my category?

    (@kahleeb)

Diggnation has already been added under Manage/Categories. I had not used the “Link Categories” for Diggnation. Something is screwed up in WordPress because no new Category I add–even when stories are posted within it–are listed under categories on the sidebar.

What can I do about getting this issue resolved? I have already tried to reinstall 1.5.2 and it did not fix it.

https://www.rutherfordfamily.net is the URL for the site.

Okay, if you aren’t seeing a Manage tab next to Dashboard, when you access /wp-admin/options-general.php…. maybe you need to reupload the entire wp-admin folder from a fresh download.

In response to “Okay, if you aren’t seeing a Manage tab next to Dashboard, when you access /wp-admin/options-general.php…. maybe you need to reupload the entire wp-admin folder from a fresh download.”

I can see this without any problems. However, there is nothing in here about making new categories.

Clicking on Manage tab, should open a screen with Posts from which you can edit, delete etc. To the right of the Posts tab, you should see Pages, Categories, Comments, etc. If you aren’t seeing those, then you probably should re-upload the wp-admin folder from a fresh download.

If you see the Categories tab and click on it, you should see a screen with Categories at the top, and in parentheses a link to “add new”.

I clicked on the manage tab and that is where I have added the Diggnation and all other categories. If they are added there, why are the categories not showing up by the WordPress category section of the sidebar?

One last idea: did the categories show up if you switch to the default or classic theme? If yes, there is something wrong with that theme.

No, they do not show up if I switch to the default or classic theme. I have also already reinstalled 1.5.2.

Well…. if you want to zip (or rar) your ENTIRE install, and send it to me at vkaryl*at*bytehaven*dot*com, I’ll load it up on a testsite and see what I can see.

Thanks vkaryl for your help on this. I also appreciate all the other feedback. I have sent the e-mail with my zipped up WordPress file to vakaryl and hope that something will come up from this to resolve my issue.

I tried to troubleshoot the issue on my end as best as I could so I may have a webserver glitch, still a bad install, or possibly some strange bug.

Thanks again and if we can ever get something resolved on this, I will post the resolution here if vkaryl (or someone else) doesn’t do it first.
