Our WordPress website hasn’t been updated in quite some time. We’re still running on version 3.3.1 and the most recent says it’s 3.9.1. In addition, we have several plugins that need updated and one theme update. I wasn’t around when the last updates where done, but it looks like it’s been a couple years. My question is, could there be serious complications from updating since it’s been awhile? I spoke with one developer who said that it may be worse to update rather than let it go. I don’t have any experience with this so any advice would be appreciated!

The developer sounds like he/she’s never had to delouse a hacked website before.

I agree. Cleaning up after a hack caused by out-of-date software can be a nightmare – both in terms of cost & time (think “weeks” not “days”). As you have such an old version of WordPress, you will need to carry out a series of smaller manual upgrades to bring WordPress up to date but it should be possible to complete that within a few hours. See Upgrading_WordPress_Extended for the full details.

Whether your old theme and plugins will continue to work with the current version of WordPress is another matter.

That’s what I’m afraid of! Thanks for your input and for the link.
