I have been managing my WP site exclusively through [site]/wp-admin. When I try to create or edit a page or post, I have the following issues:

    • Fields for the title and body are blank, and I cannot see what I type.
    • Cannot toggle b/w visual and text modes.
    • Cannot access any of the text editing tools.

This is what I’ve tried so far:

    • Switching browsers. I’ve tried FF, Chrome, and IE. This trick worked when I saw similar issues a couple months ago, but now nothing I try works.
    • Disabling all plugins.
    • Changing themes.
    • Making sure all plugins, the site, and my browsers are running current versions.

As a unrelated question, I see in most posts people are referring to hosted sites and local installs of WP. Do I need to do this? I was pretty happy just using wp-admin, but I’m not sure why I’d need to have a local install.

Please go gently. I’m fairly new in my position and also new to WP. Any help is much appreciated.

I should probably add that the site I manage is hosted on a third-party site (not WP). I don’t have credentials to access the files there, but I can probably get them if I have to.

You dont NEED a local install, but it helps when developing a site so your not cowboy coding on a live site. It just aids in development.

In chrome or firefox right click and select inspect element and go to the console. Do you see any errors?

Thanks so much Evan. It sounds like, for now at least, it’s suitable to use wp-admin. I might shift gears later if I have the budget to get creative with the site. And I have lots of ideas brewing!

When I look at the page elements, I don’t any errors, although the issue I’m having is in the authoring environment (wp-admin) when I try to create or edit a post. The rendered pages perform fine when they’re live. Hopefully this makes sense.

    Thanks again.

    Hi Evan,

Chrome detected an error in the post page (…/wp-admin/post-new.php) that the others missed: tinymce is not defined. Not sure if you know what this is?

In the meantime, I opened a ticket with the hosting provider, and they’re currently trying to help fix it. Also, I obtained the FTP logon credentials for the host account owner so that I can access the files myself and look at some of the potential culprits that I’ve read about in other threads.

My hosting provider was able to get this resolved for me as things came to a screeching halt until it got fixed. The rep told me that he turned off magic_quotes.
