• Plugin popup within wordpress plugin interface says personal use is free.

“PS: You’ll need an Akismet.com API key to use it. Keys are free for personal blogs; paid subscriptions are available for businesses and commercial sites.”

When you try to get a key the website prompts for credit card information for subscription for personal use and says it will charge you $48 in one year.

After you choose the Personal plan, move the cost slider down to zero to get the plan for free.

That’s how it should default when you select the plan. I also just checked what you said and when you do that the prompt for card info goes away. It was not obvious that was a slider to select free. It looks like it’s to select a more advanced plan.
The interface reminds me of the tricky check box that Network Solutions started using after about 15 years as a customer. For domain renewal’s to automatically renew anything that you are in process of renewing/purchasing and if you don’t see it you will be automatically charged and renewed for what ever it was you were purchasing when renewal time comes. However they did it over a month before due and when I said something, they said, I didn’t un-check the box.
    They’ve since removed that.
I’ve since moved to another solution here and may come back and try this. You should change your defaults. You will get more customers with the most user friendly interface but telling someone it’s free then defaulting to asking for card info is not the way.
20 years ago when I entered IT, I said the best things on the internet are completely free. To this day that still holds true. After all, look at your platform, is it running on Windows?

    Thanks for the response.
