Minify breaks css

When minify is enabled, the site css breaks. I can see minify files created in /cache/minify/000000/ folder, but the names of these files do not correspond to the css files linked in the site header html. e.g. <link

Minify was working ok in the past, but it stopped working a couple of months ago when this symptom appeared after trying to flush the cache. I had hoped it was a temporary glitch, but all the programmatic and manual purging of the cache I have tried so far has failed. Specifically, which files should I be deleting manually via ftp to ensure a full cache rebuild (just in case the minify or enhanced page caching is failing)?
