I am migrating a 3dCart store with about 200 products to WooCommerce.

The store is ready but I need to move it to a hosting server and make the necessary DNS changes.

How do you recommend doing this and letting the customer base know about the change. What about down time? How should I handle what could be up to 72 hours of DNS changes? Thanks!

  • DNS changes very rarely take 72 hours! That’s really just a worse case scenario.

Are you changing the URL or pointing the exiting one at the new store?

    I would do this:

Make sure the new site is working on the new server!
Put the old site into some sort of maintenance mode – ie: when a visitor arrives all they see is a message that says something like ‘We’re doing essential maintenance please come back shortly’
Put the WooCommerce site into maintenance mode – you’ll need a plugin for that.
Make the DNS changes and sit back until you see the new site come up with the domain name.
TEST!!! With your site set to maintence you will be able to log in and use the site as normal – make sure it works and when you’re happy, turn of the maintenance mode plugin.
Your visitors will start to see the new site – those who’s DNS takes longer to change will continue to see the old site’s message until it does.

Thanks. This would be pointing the existing domain to the new store.

I agree that the 72 hour “rule” has never been a concern for me but I’ve never needed low downtime. This sounds like a good way to proceed – thanks!
