• I am a high school digital media teacher and host my own class website (currently under summer redesign): https://maclab.edisonchargers.com/. Last year I added a separate WordPress install with BuddyPress for student Websites: https://boltpress.edisonchargers.com/. Both are hosted on an Apple Xserve in my classroom.

Everything worked fine, but I think I’d like to merge the two installs instead of having the student sites under a separate/install domain. Since the school year is getting ready to start and I haven’t made the new WordPress accounts, yet, I figured this was a good time to look into this.

Basically, I want to know if it is possible to move the existing (~220) blogs/sites from the boltpress domain to sub-directory sites under my maclab domain?

If so, is this even a good idea as far as best practices? Or should I just leave the student sites as a separate “site”?

Yes it’s possible, but dear god, that’s something I’d never want to try.

Moving WordPress MultiSite, in general, is a PITA because of how it stores data.

What you’d be doing is moving boltpress.edisonchargers.com to maclab.edisonchargers.com/boltpress – am I right?

I might do it by bringing the maclab site over to boltpress and making THAT the front site – keeping buddypress on a sub-site – and then do a mass search/replace of boltpress.edisonchargers.com for maclab.edisonchargers.com/boltpress

Except I’m not 100% sure that would work. Yick. If it wasn’t ~200 blogs, I’d say create a new network off maclabs and just import everything, but that’s the grunt way.

You’d also have to renumber everything (blog IDs) and possibly the user IDs and then tie them into exiting.

This is not something I’d look forward to doing, I know that.. ??

It would almost be easier to add BP to the blog network and start over with that, dropping the single BP install all together.

Bummer. It is only one years worth of blogs. I like to keep them up for as long as possible (previous years were done in Dreamweaver and Flash and are still available). I could just start fresh and have a one year gap in my historical archive.

Or I could just leave them separate. I am going to have ~200 new ones every year. My main issues was that by continuing to have them on their own install I don’t have much “front page” content since it is all on the Mac Lab site. Does that make sense?

How would you approach if you were having a class website with tutorials, galleries, information, etc. and students having their own sites?

You could keep this one separate, and make a new one off maclab to go forward?

Yeah leave the old one as is, but going forward put the rest all on the one multsite install.
