Migrating from Joomla, articles or pages ?

  • Hello I’m a new user of wordpress, I have two sites I wish to migrate from Joomla. While one have bascially some static pages and some news, the other one ha a more complicated structure.
    For the first one a mix of pages and articles will work pretty fine, but the second has some a structure based on categories with multiple pages under each category, the pages are updated time in time but are bascially static. Some categories has 10 articles, some others 100+, and I use menu items to show the list of all the articles in that category. The urls also reflects the topic of the pages, so they are like:

    https://sitename/cms/category/topic_of_the_page

    So if I’ll convert everythinhg into pages in wordpress, I’ll have problems with the resulting urls, but I can use categoruies, if I migrated them as pages, I can obtain a more clean url, but I have no possibility to use categories.
    I have categories and subcategories also…

    Migration of the data itself I see it’s not a problem, and I understand from teh documentation that I can easily convert a page into an article and an article into a page, but any suggestion, ideas or experience about how to approach a situation like the one I have please ?

    Hello @threadi thank you for your reply, yes I already tested the plugin, and it works pretty fine.
    Fg-joomla-to-wordpress migrates everything, included categories, and eveything is converted into articles.
    My question is more about the way to approach the situation using wordpress.
    Even I start from scratch the problem remains, since categories are only for articles, and my content is more suitable to be created using pages. The ideal would be to have some similar to categories with pages. My content is not cronological or based on the author, and none of them are news.

    The categories of posts are a taxonomy. Pages can also have such taxonomies. The freedom in WordPress also lies in the fact that you can create such taxonomies yourself. There are various ways to do this:

    Thank you @dilip2615 and@threadi for all you insights. I took some time to read all the links, expecially everything related to the taxonomy. I need to do some tests, in Joomla there are a very small number of extentions, while in WordPress plugins are really a lot, it’s quite diffitult to understand which of them will be supported in the next years and what will be not, but I guess it only requires some “practice”.
