I am a bit overwhelmed with all of the resources out there, but haven’t come across much that speaks to the process when you have your blog hosted on your own domain (not blogspot.com). I am keeping my blog at the same domain. Are there special steps to take in order to do this?

Currently, my blog is set to domain/news and I intend to move my blog to the index page.

‘create the .htaccess file, set permissions’

what is that all about? why do you need to do that?

    seems like something i’ve overlooked…

The easiest way I found to migrate from self hosted FTP Blogger to selfhosted wordpress (www.remarpro.com) was:

    1. Export blog from Blogger as xml file (go to Settings on Blogger′s dashboard, then Basic, and finally Blog Tools)
    2. Create a temporary blogspot.com blog (again, through the dashboard)
    3. Import your xml file to the temporary blogspot.com blog
    4. In WordPress under Tools use the WordPress import tool to import from the temporary blogspot.com blog

Of course now you are stuck with the issue of figuring out how to redirect your post links from your old domain (the original one) to your new one. It seems like all the plugins out there are set up to redirect from blogspot urls to wordpress ones. I′m having a hard time finding a way to redirect my posts from my original (not temporary blogspot.com) blog posts to the new wordpress one.

Anyway, hope this helps with the initial part of migration!

Best post for this information is below:

I’ve just finished migrating a client over to WordPress and we are still having some issues with comments but everything else has worked fine. Permalinks are exactly the same so there should be no loss in SEO value.

I run into issues with missing comments and the XML file generated from the backup of the FTP site is too large for the appspot tool to convert it to a WXR file (which for us would also create 1100 duplicates). Looks like I might be getting down to hand editing the XML file into small enough chunks then editing 2200 or so duplicates to figure out which one is the best post.

curtismchale – In trying to get all of my comments, I ended up with duplicate posts as well. I used this plug-in, I think it was called WP-eDel, to delete all the duplicate posts automatically. It worked quite nicely. However, I still only have 50 comments imported – if you know of any way to fix that for a complete non-tech person, I’d love to hear it.

    thanks
