• I have been using a free web host while I set up my WP site. Now that it’s all done I went and bought hosting from Namecheap.

I uploaded the site and WordPress and everything seems to look fine, but I think I may have problems with my WP database. I couldn’t figure out a way to import my old sql database which I have saved. So now my wp-config file is connected to my old sql database from the free host. My site still displays normally, but I’m guessing this will cause problems somewhere down the road.

After this, I created a new database, user, and password from my Namecheap cPanel. However, with Namecheap there is no option to choose a host and it didn’t tell me what the host was. So I took my old wp-config file and updated the database’s name, user, and password. I left host a lone and it’s still left as my old host before I switched to Namecheap hosting. With this wp-config file uploaded, the site again loads normally.

So with either wp-config file the site loads properly, but I don’t think it’s set up properly. Does anyone know what I should put for host in my wp-config file for Namecheap? Also, will I be fine using my newly created database for Namecheap or do I need to import my old database from the free host?

If I do need to import the database, how do I do that? I don’t see any obvious options for it in the cPanel?

I read it, but it doesn’t mention what to do about the hosts portion of the file.

This is a question to ask Namecheap.

I know and I have. That’s the first thing I did. None of the Customer Service reps I spoke to knew.

Try a more knowledgeable web host

Got it working. For anyone that has this problem in the future, use ‘localhost’ as the host in your wp-config.php file.

Glad to know that you could solve the problem.

Not for all hosting companies, it can be different, for instance, server-configured names in the case of some hosts.

Alright, the site is up, but looks like it isn’t entirely fixed. The image slider, nivo, isn’t displaying images and I can’t add widgets. When I pull up widgets under the WP dashboard it shows them and it shows the places they can be put in the right hand column. There are drop-down arrows so I can put the widget there, but when I click on them they don’t open up and I can’t drag the widgets.

    Any idea what’s wrong?

    How can I fix that?

By the way, I didn’t import my old database, I made a new one. Everything else is the old version though.

Every time I try to import in phpMyAdmin I get this error:

I had a ping optimizer plugin. That seems to be causing the problem.

I’m talking to them now in live chat and they don’t know what you mean, can you explain in more detail?

    Thanks

My advise again, is a better web host. They can quote me on that.

Wish I knew that before hand, I bought a year of hosting 3 days ago. They were able to upload my old database though, so now the widgets are displaying properly on the site.

However, I can’t edit them from the admin section, drop down menu still doesn’t work, and the slider still isn’t displaying.

Namecheap refunded me, I didn’t think they would be willing to. they’re hosting wasn’t great, but I like their customer service. I don’t care for GoDaddys and I’ll be transferring all of my domains as they expire.

Can you recommend me a host? I know you posted WordPress’s recommended hosts earlier, but I’m not sure what host to choose. Although it is important to me that WordPress works, only 1/3 of my sites are WP. The rest I code in php/html/css.

So whoever the host is, I need them to provide good service fot regular sites as well as WP.

    Thanks.
