• I’m attempting to load an old site that was on a paid hosting platform to my local machine. I followed all the steps in this article: https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-move-live-wordpress-site-to-local-server/. However when I try and load my site I get this message:

    localhost refused to connect.
    Try:

    Checking the connection
Checking the proxy and the firewall
    ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED

I’m on a mac, running MAMP (latest install). I did a test by creating a quick WordPress test site using the famous 5 min install and that site works just fine, so I assume MAMP and my system are working fine.

I have updated my wp-config file with all the correct info. I manually updated my wp_options (siteurl and home).

Any other ideas I should try to get this working?

    Thanks in advance!

My suggestion would be, and what I always do for this sort of thing is:

    1. on the hosted site, install the All In One WP Migration plugin and select ‘Export to File’.

    2. on the local site “that works just fine”, install the All In One WP Migration plugin and select ‘Import from File’, selecting the file exported above.

    3. Follow the on-screen instructions and then log out, then log in, and re-save Permalinks twice.

    Done ??

Works first time, every time for me ??

    Cheers!

Thanks Lyle, I should have mentioned that this is an old site, the hosting is since closed (1yr ago). I did a full backup and exported my databases before shutting it down, so I have all the files. So unfortunately I can’t try that option.
