Hi. I have successfully migrated a handful of my sites from another SEO plugin to Yoast. I’m pleased to report that everything went very well. I expect it will be the same for my remaining sites.

But could I suggest one thing. In your documentation about migrating, it doesn’t mention adding the new Yoast XML sitemap to Google Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools.

I’m not sure if this is an oversight, or whether the expectation is that GSC and Bing will find the new sitemap location automatically.

Anyway, it’s only a small issue. But thank you for making migrating so easy.

  • Hi @bobsled,

Sorry to hear that wasn’t easy to find and thanks for the suggestion.

We have the full list of steps for setting up the plugin in the configuration guide for Yoast SEO.

It was just a thought. But after a little checking, it seems that my old sitemap.xml is automatically redirecting to sitemap_index.xml. Is this a Yoast feature?

If it is, there is no real need to add a new sitemap to search engines.

Yoast SEO redirects the sitemap.xml to sitemap_index.xml when there are no other sources are using the sitemap.xml. However, we still recommend everyone to submit the sitemap_index.xml manually to Search Engines Webmaster Tools to make sure that search engines crawler can crawl the site efficiently.
