Migrate large volume WordPress website.

    I have a website which is 7.8GB on disk usage, 375MB is mysql file and 1m viewers a day. And, my server is not able to manage that much amount of traffic. So, I want to migrate to another server. My internet connection is very low in respect to other countries 256Kbps.

    I have considered via using plugins & services like vaultpress, buddypress, codeguard.

    I need suggestions from all my fellow WordPress, a suggestion which is allow me to quickly migrate website from on server to VPS.

  • At 256Kbps transferring that much data will be slow no matter what you do.

    The easiest way that I know of for a full migration like that is when your current server and the new server both use the same management system (cPanel is the best example here) that has an import function available. That way the entire account can be transferred to the new server pretty much automatically.

    If you don’t have that option I’d suggest using SSH to log onto the new server and copying all of the files from the current server that way. The reason for that is that most other methods will need a two-step transfer process – current site -> your local PC -> new server. If you can cut out the middle point things will go much faster.

    That is really a great suggestion. But,I am not going to use cPanel on my VPS. I have migrated a lot of websites from one server to another, and never work with SSH. All those websites were very decent in size like 150-300MB.

    Do you have any link to any reference material related to website using SSH method?

    SSH is the standard method of connecting to a *nix server to use the command line. To copy files you’d be using the scp command.

    There’s huge amounts of references out there if you do some really simple searches. As an example…
