Methodology to build advanced WordPress sites. Guidance needed

  • This might be an open-ended question and I hope someone can clarify my mind a little bit.

    I assume there are many pros on this site so fingers crossed.

    I feel pretty confident for developing basic themes or modifying the existing ones however, I come across a few sites that are almost impossible to build with blocks. CSS-TRICKS is one of them and there are some others as well, suchs as:

    I was wondering how advanced WordPress devs build sites like these! I can also hand-code the pages in template files but wouldn’t that contradict with the purpose of WordPress?

    If any pro devs out there can share their workflow or point me to the right direction, I would really appreciate it.
