    Good morning,

I am having an issue with the free PowerPress plugin. The Meta Boxes for adding a podcast episode are not appearing under posts. Even when navigating from the main Powerpress page in the WordPress Admin Panel and clicking “Create New Episode”, it brings you to a new post, but there are no custom fields for the actual podcast episode or any information to be placed. I haven’t been able to find anything in the settings, but it seems that something is missing here.

    Thank you,

    Tommy

    Give this a try:
1.) Log in to your WordPress site
2.) Go to PowerPress >> Settings >> Advanced tab; find the User Role Management checkbox; if the box is currently checked, uncheck it; if the box is currently unchecked, check it
3.) Click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the page
4.) Clear any site caches, if applicable

    See if that helps.

    Good morning,

Thank you so much for following up. That solved the problem for now! Ideally, we would like to be able to restrict access to posting and editing podcasts by user role, are there specific user permissions we can add to User Role Editor?

I wasn’t able to find it in the documentation, but this would be super helpful if you could point me in the right direction.

    Thank you,
    Tommy

PowerPress doesn’t have any user role functionality beyond the User Role Management checkbox mentioned in the previous post. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear, but are there any user capabilities that can be enabled or disabled via an external plugin to allow for finer user role management control? For example, if we wanted Editors to be able to add podcasts, but not Authors.

I understand that the user role functionality isn’t included in the plugin beyond the option mentioned, but how would one go about utilizing this option? I couldn’t find anything in the documentation. It seems like that option, a long with adding some custom permissions to custom user roles (managed with a separate plugin like the one I linked in my previous post) might be able to accomplish something like this.

I hope this makes sense. Thank you again for following up.

The User Role Management checkbox in the PowerPress settings Advanced tab activates/deactivates access to the Podcast Episode box for editor/author user roles but there’s no way to get more granular than that. I did some testing with the User Role Editor plugin but the plugin doesn’t list any of the PowerPress functions as options to activate/deactivate. If this is something you’d like, we can put it in as a request with the Blubrry dev team for consideration in a future update of PowerPress.

Thank you for your response. The User Role Editor plugin allows custom capabilities to be added, so if you were to add capabilities that can be called from code or from another plugin that could allow for more granular control of user access, that would be very helpful. They still may not show up in the plugin, but if they were added and then documented on your website, they could be utilized by this or other user role editing plugins.

Thank you again for taking the time to help with this issue.

Are you looking to remove access to the Podcast Episode box for all Author-level users? Or only some Author-level users? What about for Editor-level users? For your use case, would it be OK if all Editor-level users have access to the Podcast Episode box? Or would you want to control it on a user-by-user basis?

Yes, we would like to only enable it for a custom user role that has been created on the website, as well as for Administrators. Ideally, I would like to be able to control it using Capabilities in WordPress, so that the meta boxes could show up based on user role, or on a per user basis. This way it could be enabled in a variety of different ways, either by code or by a plugin like User Role Editor. I think this would be a useful feature to add.

    Thanks again

The latest PowerPress update added edit_podcast to the options available thru User Role Editor capabilities, so you should be able to control which user levels can see the Podcast Episode box now.

Thank you, Shawn, for following up! This is very useful for my client.

    Have a great day!
