Meta widget not showing up in side bars, print icon not showing

I can’t get the Meta widget to show in the sidebar. I am also having trouble getting the WP-Print icon to show up. I copied and pasted the php snippet into the php.index page following the usage instructions given by Lester Chan but that doesn’t work either.
I’m using the sandbox theme.
Everything else seems to be fine so far. I’ve got various other widgets in the sidebars, all working. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong please?
