The meta title is automatically placed in the page tab. But an acceptable title is too long for the tab. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

    Hello!

You can ignore the browser’s page tab (I think this is what you meant?). Not many good titles will fit in there. The browser-tab shows only a part of the title so that the browser-user can recognize the page, and if they wish to know more, they can hover over it, or even click it.

For good SEO, please ignore the browser-tab and appease Google Search, Facebook, among other platforms, instead. Your visitors should know which page they’ve landed on via anchor-link texts they’ve clicked on, and by the title visual on the page itself.

For our recommended guidelines, please see this KB article section on pixel counter colors.

Thanks for your reply. I don’t understand what you mean when you say “you can ignore the browser’s page tab” I am developing a site for a non-profit, and they do not like the look of the tab with text that is not readable.

Are you saying there is a checkbox or control that prevents the page title from being placed in the tab?

    Thanks

    Hi John,

The browser will always pick the title tag that’s also meant for search engines to consume. I’m afraid there’s no way around this — the protocol controlled by W3C doesn’t provide an alternative, and browser vendors haven’t shown signs to change this, either.

To learn more, please refer to the Usage Notes and Accessibility Concerns at https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/title.

The non-profit can not and should not control or interfere with how the protocols interface. Millions ignore this issue, and although I also believe it should be addressed at some point, the non-profit will do themselves harm by not conforming. So, I strongly advise them to ignore the issue for their own sake, or otherwise come up with titles where the first few words that fit in the bar describe the page well, whereafter the following words expound on that.
