Meta Description Question

  • I’m on a discussion forum about beginner SEO and affiliate marketing. There are some people on the board that say the All in One SEO pack automatically creates a meta description based on your content when you DO NOT fill in the manual description for a post or page.

    They also say that this is better for beginners than filling in a manual description.

    So, three questions. Does all in one SEO actually create an automatic meta description even when you do not fill out the manual one?

    If so, is it just the first 120 characters of the post (I think I read this somewhere) or is there an algorithm & what metrics are used to create this auto description?

    Lastly, in your opinion, do you think not filling in the fields is a wise path for beginners in SEO?

    This happens if you have the “Autogenerate Descriptions” option checked; it is checked by default. If there’s no description provided, it will use the manual excerpt if there is one; if there is no manual excerpt then yes it will use the first 160 characters of the text of the post content. I think ideally people should enter good descriptions of their content; but this option is available if they haven’t done that yet.

    I have “Autogenerate Descriptions” option checked, but I have the post name in my meta description:

    <meta name=”description” content=”SQL Group Functions” />
